obesity trends since 1985

This video blows my mind on several fronts:

1.) The sheer uniformity of the problem. It's not limited to any one part of the country.

2.) The speed of the change.  1985 wasn't that long ago - about a generation.  One generation ago we were a fairly healthy population; today we're quickly approaching a point where HALF of us are more than 30 lbs overweight.

3.) The trend.  It looks like the trend is accelerating, not slowing down. Where will it end?

Give it a watch here:

While a lot has changed in 27 years, not that much has changed. We had computers in the mid-80's (although not as commonplace). We had video games. We had cars. Most of the excuses I hear today were already in place back then.

But portion control - that's what got out of control. What happened to moderation?

  • Big Gulps, Super Big Gulps, and Thirst Busters made gigantic sodas commonplace. (300 extra calories every day has to have an effect, no?)
  • Double Bacon Cheeseburgers and Super-Sized Fries ("normal" lunches are now about 500 calories bigger than they used to be, give or take.)
  • Restaurant portions where one dinner plate could feed a whole family.
Forget about all the heart healthy options, saturated fat, high fructose corn syrup, yadda yadda yadda.  Cut the portion sizes, cut the calories, cut the lbs. Simple as pie. (a small piece of pie.)
